Just three hours by car and ferry from Glasgow, the Isle of Gigha is a fabulous getaway for a weekend break. The jewel of the island is the 52 acre Achamore Gardens, and in the heart of the gardens is the stunning baronial mansion Achamore House. With 12 bedrooms the house is a very unusual B&B. While it is the size of a hotel, the house is home to the Dennis family, who open their doors to guests with warm and informal hospitality.
The house is a perfect setting for family celebrations, as it can take upwards of two dozen guests. A large dining room sits 30 people, and although Achamore House does not offer evening meals, a very fine local chef is able to be brought in by special arrangement. Breakfasts are superb full Scottish, with local eggs and Gigha bread.
The island has a rich and ancient archaeological heritage and offers a range of activities, from long walks, lovely secluded beaches to trips around the island by boat. Achamore House itself is so compelling you’ll want to return again and again.
